Final Blog Reflection
Comment on your writing skills and other skills developed this quarter. What knowledge, skills, and awareness will you take away from this project? How did our hands-on (doing activities), place-based (working in Kahalu'u), interdisciplinary (learning other subjects), and inquiry-based (asking your questions) learning experience help you to acquire new knowledge and skills?

During this quarter my peers went on several feild trips to Kahalu'u unfortunatly I have not been able to go on any of them due to low grades in most of my classes. In that situation I wanted to get as many as my grades up rather than go on the feild trip. That reason being was because I think if I get good grades and things I will have other opportunities to go on feild trips like that.
ReplyDeleteI think my knowledges and skills I can take away from this would be to get all my work done on time and come to school when needed. I think that if I went on the feild trips based on what my peers said it was fun, hard work and had alot of good food, I think I would have had alot of fun and gained alot of knowledge. To me learning hands-on is better than having a visual or sound way of learning because you actually get to do it with your hands and experience how it really gets done as if your seeing and hearing it you won't know how it feels and how it's supposed to get done. Being hands-on and learning thins within the same settings are easier than having multiple places to learn about. I think the skills that some of my peers had gained was learning how to build and put together a rock wall, learn chants, and for another class prepare food. I think third quarter was very different from the first and second quarter by having hands-on learning. In my opinion hands-on learning is more educational learning so more schools and classes should have more feild trips like this because they don't only learn things about one class, they learn about multiple things.
This was are very last field trip and i enjoyed it very much.I think was the funnest one we went on.This wholexpierence was really great.somethinghat i took away from the whole thing was a greater deeper knowledge of hawaii and there people.
ReplyDeleteI am now more appreciative of where i live and its not just another place its so much more. A writting skill that i gained was Great hawaiian my most favorite hands on expierience was at story writing skills i learned the five basics to writing a hawaiian story.
Another thing that i like the most was our service the planting of each plant. I thought it was so unique how every plant that you plant you recite a chant for its health and weath for it to grow and produce great fruit
I feel after putting alot of atention in my vocabulary and english writing skill, I have increased my writing and critical thinking skills.
ReplyDeleteThe feild trips mixed things up in our sometimes repedative class. I think that the hands on training the class did with the native people at kahalu'u, helped change the way we think and learn.

ReplyDeleteGoing to Kahalu'u helped me learn more about Hawaiian history. It also taught me the importance of knowing my genealogy. I thought it was amazing how the few people who kept in track of their family tree could date back their ancestors from generations ago. I learned many Hawaiian chants as well as dances and ate cultural food. We all worked hard until the project we were working on were complete: no one stops until the job is done.
ReplyDeleteThe restoration of the heiaus were cool because they took the original boulders and small rocks to form the once broken Heiau. knowing that people still care about their Hawaiian culture is great especially when they get a younger generation involved. The aunties and uncles were very nice, and told us many stories that went along with the restored heiaus. I believe that it was a good and new learning experience that will live inside of me for a long time. We should continue to teach the new generations to come the importance of keeping our culture.

Over the third quarter, by going to Kahalu'u, I developed writing skills in surprising ways. By being there, the assignments that were given helped me to take better notes so that I could write my photo poem, photo essay, and the story that we are working on right now. On the last fieldtrip I learned the elements of writing a Hawaiian short story. This was good for me because I know that I will use it for my story that I'm writing right now.
ReplyDeleteGoing to Kahalu'u was a good learning experience for all the students. I think that even though I do not completely believe the stories that were told and the tales about the islands and heiaus, it is fun information to have about what other people think. I think that by going to Kahalu'u, instead of learning in a classroom, it made this quarter's learning much more fun and interesting. I enjoyed going on these trips, but I do wish that there hadn't been so many. Because of these trips I have gotten behind on my work in other classes and my grades have dropped from last semester.

ReplyDeleteEven though I did not go on the trip I did learn a few things in class. I did learn the chants that would allow me to enter in a heau site, and that is a skill that will help me when ever I come in contact with other heaus. I also learned about the hawaiians culture in the old days when they used to live off the land. when they used nets to catch fish and use tools to make what they need.
What I will be aware of in the future is how many heaus we would be able to save, and hwo many heaus that would not be save becuase we would be too late. Also some hands on thing I did was to make a photo poem about kahalu'u. Also a 5 photo essay about the heaus . With all these knowledge and skills that I've obtain in class, I hope I can use it the future for something useful.
This quarter in english ten our class decided to switch things up. We didnt read any books on thew holocaust, or watch any videos, or read storys about people turning into bugs. Instead we stuck to the island roots and read up on hawaiian culture. As soon as third quarter started we were introduced to Kahalu'u's story. We met a few of the elders that work at the Kahalu'u heiau restoration site. We were taught the chants required to enter the site and a few traditional dances. We practiced our chants until we were decent enough to enter and then the field trips began.
ReplyDeleteBut we werent sheltering our knowledge and only learning about Kahalu'u we also read a few hawaiian creation storys and worked on a dialectical journal. We learned what ancient hawaii was like from a hawaiian perspective. We really dove deep into the culture and came back to the surface with new things we had never even heard of. This quarter was much different from first and second and ill be coming back fourth quarter with hopes that we switch things up again.
3rd quarter is better then the first two quarters because i was still learning all the new subjects and class's.1st and 2nd quarter were about vocab, writing, and other stuff like that, the class was boring and the students didnt respect the teacher.3rd quarter is more focused on hawaiian outcomes and the culture, its more intersting to us now.i love being in that class now, also all the photos we get to see are wonderful.Even though i didnt go to kahalu'u my other class's and classmates shared there stortys being there and i learned alot from them. Some of the students took there own pictures.i have learned alot about my cultrue and i thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis quarter i have improoved in my writeing skills along with reading and i also have improoved in my computer skills this quarter. From this project i have learned about hawaiian culture and history.I also have learned about kahalu'u and its people. The uncles toght us how to chant, thrownet and how to respect and care for the land.I enjoyed workind hands on to learn more instead of borng school work i learn mutch better this way.
ReplyDeleteThe trips to kahalu'u have impacted me only in positive ways like meeting some of people of kahalu'u and learning all about this great place.I also hade alot of fun on each trip we hade to work but it was good to know we helped the great people of kahalu'u.I think this project was a good example of how we should be learning because it is so mutch more efective.I am very thankful for being able to be a part of this great project.
This quarter we learned a lot about our history in Hawaii. We went on numerous fild trips to Kahaluu beach down south a little from out school. We learned chants, dances, and we did labor for a thank you for leeting us be there. We got a lot of social time this quarter and got to interact a lot with our peers. Because of this my writing skills improved a little.
ReplyDeleteI will take away some awareness about our lands and use it in my life in the future to remember to stay true to what I know best which is Hawaii and its roots.
I was not able to go on any of these trips because of my other classes and most of them i ended up not being able to come to school anyways. I've talked to students who were able to attend these trips and they have shared what they have learned. They learn many things about the Hawaiian culture and what has happened in history. They learned dances and chants and songs and how to do hands on work to help the land. They learned many stories and they came back to use their knowledge and write the stories in their own words. Also they were very good and coming back and telling us the stories we missed out on.
ReplyDeleteThis quarter, we learned a lot about the Hawaiian culture, the chants, and the many stories that lie at the sacred site of Kahalu'u. I have improved my writing skills and listening skills because after each field trip, we had to type a blog and talk about what we learned during the field trip. We were also assigned to write a photo essay and a photo poem which also improved my photography skills.
ReplyDeleteWe learned a whole lot by going to the site and listening and chanting the many chants, learning about how our genealogy helps us see how everyone is connected somehow, and how the ancient Hawaiians used the natural resources that was provided for them at Kahalu'u. After this experience, I can now pass down some of the knowledge that I've learned from Kahalu'u to people who want to learn more about it.
My writing skills this year, has improved. With the Fieldtrips that we were able to go on to Kahalu'u, has made it a little easier for me to express the way I feel about the places that I live in. I now have the ability to write freely about what I want to write about and have the Hawaiian meaning or way to tell my story.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great way to get out of the classroom and get a hands-on expierence to do things that I had never done. And to learn just as much by working with my hands, as i would in the class. But, with being out of the class, i have the chance to see my sourroundings and explain my point of view of the way that I want to tell a story.
I now have knowledge that I have learned, added to what i already know. And thats the best part:)
This quarter unfortunately I did not attend any of the trips that my classmates had gone on. I have however discussed with my peers the experiences that they had. They told me they had gotten alot of information from the speakers down at kahalu'u. Alot of the students in my english class just learned some of the things that many of the Hawaiian students already knew. Overall I think that everyone had a chance to expand their knowledge in Hawaiian culture.
ReplyDeleteIt would've been neat if I had attended these trips, because I have an interest in Hawaiian culture. Although I did not attend the trips, I have expanded my writing skills. For example there was a day where in class we were told to re-tell a story that we had read in our groups. From there we had to tell the story to the class based on what we had read. My classmates told me that, the speakers on the field trip re-told stories over time and they had changed. This showed me that although I did not attend the trip I still can walk away with some knowledge.
This quarter we went on a couple of field trips to kahalu'u. We seen some ancient temples and sacred sites. At the trip we divided into different groups and followed the kapuna's which taught us many different things.
ReplyDeleteI developed many different skills like writing, team work, and getting closer to the culture and the surroundings. Getting these skills helped me with writing, like photo poems, photo essays, and stories. Learning about the culture and the surroundings also helped me create my stories and what to write about. it helped me choose my topics too. At the trip we also worked hands on and helped with the sites. like planting and digging. By doing that, the experience was actually enjoyable and i think it made me connect more with the site. It also helped me get along with my class mates by working together to get the job done.

This quarter we had many field trips to the Kahalu'u Resort where we learned much about the Hawaiian culture, learned chants and heard stories about different sites. Each student was given a journal in which they would take notes and, write down the chants we learned and anything else we heard that we might want to remember later. The field trips were very educational because before we left the site, we would have to write a little on just what we had learned that day. When we would not be on a field trip we would be in class, often relfecting on the stories that were told on the previous field trip and usually an essay was assigned. The hands-on expirence was very good for me because it was a different way of learning, and i feel that i elarn muich better when i can do everything myself then having to sit at a desk and read it out of a book. The overall expirence was very good and it makes me hope that in my english class next year, or any other classes, we take field trips for learning.
ReplyDeleteThis quarter learned a lot about the hawaiian culture and the many stories, legends that lie at the site of kahalu'u. i have learned chants of that sacred place. my freinds told me tht they saw a paper with a family tree.
ReplyDeleteEven though i didn't go from wht i heard from my fellow student tht it was a great experience and that they had a lot of fun on that fieldtrip. next time, i will try to attend the next fieldtrips because i really want to learn more about the hawaiian culture.

ReplyDeleteI have gained a lot of writing skills over the past four trips to Kahalu'u. One of my new skills that i have gained over one of the trips is taking pictures and writing a story about the picture. So i took a picture of the water reflecting the sky and building of the hotel. The story that i told about this picture was talking about the past, present, and future of my life, remembering the old kid days, talking about the present and seeing myself in the future. Also i have gain more knowledge of story telling and writing. I got to listen to all of the Kumu's story's and chants of the past and how it affected up in the presents day today. Listening to the kumu's is helping me a lot because know i know how to write and tell a good story
Over the past quarter we have been taking field trips to Kahalu'u. The skills that i hjave developed over this period of time, was how to increase my writing skills on Hawaiian literature. For our projects we had to create a photo essay, photo poem, and the story we're working on right now. The hands on experience helped me to grow knowledge of hawaiian history and the stories behind the Heiaus'.
ReplyDeleteThe enviornment learning from walking around singing chants to taking photos. Something I took away fromthis experience was the stronger knowledge of Hawaii and its people.
this quarter i learned alot about the hawaiian culture and the many different.I thought these field trips would be junk and we wouldn't like it.But, al that changed when we stepped onto that sacred site. It also made me realize that even though people come from different backgrounds, we all can still connect to our heritage....
ReplyDeleteWhen the quarter started we were all over school. just a little bit after that we found out that we were going on a field trip. We all was excited and kinda over it.
When we got there we all chanted "e ho mai"
a chanting asking for permission to enter.the next time we went we did some field work and some fun stuff along the way.we learned how to take pictures and how to throw net. BUt all in all i learned so much from this quarter and i hope i could experience it again...........
on our trips to kahaluu, I feel like i have gained an accumulative amount of knowledge in both literary and non-literary areas. I realised that I learned better when I did any hands on projects, although I do learn just as well listening. With all the work we did we also got time to socialize, that is where I fall short, I really have no socializing skills and I have trouble talking to new people but during the last trip I managed to make a new friend.
ReplyDeleteJust like how my skills rose my knowledge on the Hawaiian culture also followed. Our kumu's told us all the stories about kahaluu and the heiau's. The stories they told of old hawaii were both old and new to me. With that i feel more prepared and confident to represent the Hawaiian part of me because I now have a more understanding of it.
Mahina- During this 3rd quarter, our English class went on a field trip to the Kahaluu Heiau. I did'nt go to this field trip but many of my friends told me that it was very fun and educational. Even though I didn't attend these field trips, I've learned 3 different chants. My friends also told me that they learned how to build/put together the heiau with certain math skills. Many measurements were used to create this heiau. Even i did not attend this field trip, I still learned many new things from the activities we did in class that relates to the heiau. We've learned many stories and legonds about the old hawaiian history. And also, we did many activities based from the hawaiian culture.

ReplyDeletemy experience at kahaluu made me learn alot of things about the ancient hawaiians.it thaught me the importances of genelogy.it was intresting to me to see a long list of names leading to where their family started.at kahaluu i learned several chants and dances and the meaning for them. it was also a privlage to be apart of kahaluu and help replant the plants because it makes you feel special for lending a hand.its pretty awesome to see people that still care for our land and our ancient hawaiian history.our kapunas were filled with aloha and told us many diffrent storys about the heiaus and their work on restoring the heiaus.i think its important to keep teaching our generation about the ancient times and history because its always good to teach others what you know and learned so that they can pass it on. i enjoyed going to kahaluu and will always remember our kupunas teachings.

ReplyDeleteI have learned alot from this expierence at kahaluu and the ancient heiaus.I found that this helped develop more skills such as writing techniques and drawing more accurate. And knowing how the ancient hawiian worked around the Heiaus.the state of mind we were in or i was in was peaceful and majesticaly.the knowledge of this place wa outstanding and it ceased the moment of how my expierence was.
This quarter we learned a lot about Hawaiian history that opened my eyes to different ideas and a new perspective. Unfortunately I was only able to go to the very first field trip and not able to go on the other trips because i thought that it would be better to stay in my classes and bring up my grades so I won't be behind on work.
ReplyDeleteFrom what i hear and learned from my peers they learned chants and history and how to rebuild the heiaus. They worked by rebuilding the heiaus and taking photos of different things to better understand the importance of nature and the surroundings. The knowledge and skills i will take away from this project is that I'm sure it would be a good feeling to help the community or yourself to rebuild heiaus or something and keeping the Hawaiian culture and connecting with it so other generations can learn. Also that it was a good hands on experience to learn in a different way and setting.

ReplyDeleteThis quarter i only went to one kahalu'u field trip. But it will be one that i will never forget. At my time down there i learned the special chants, the interesting storys of this sacred place and even got to see a family tree that was on a big piece of poster paper. I got to work with shovels and tools in a trench, it was a good experience because it was hands-on work and i enjoy that. I gained new knowledge only because i paid close attention to all the speakers and was very discplined and didnt play around.
My writing skills have leveled up from the time period before i went on my Kahalu'u experience. Also my listening skills have been much better now. Being at kahalu'u i was paying very close attention to all the kumus and adults there. The reason for this is we were on a sacred place and i felt one bad thing could disturb the gods and all the ancestors in the place. So i would not want to get in trouble so that's why i was on my best behavior.
During this quarter i have learned soo much after attending all of the feild trips that my class was available to go to. I learned more about the Hawaiian culture and how people can still live off of the land today. We learned about significant sites and sacred lands that are important to the Hawaiian culture and the people of Hawaii. we learned a lot about how the ancient Hawaiians lived, how it was in those times and We also learned about Agriculture and Plants. Our Kumus taught us new chants, which was fun but really hard. Our Kumus were Uncle Mahealani Pai, Aunty Kalani, Uncle Kaipo and Kumu Keala. They taught me so much. I enjoyed helping improve Kahalu'u and helping work on the trenches and plants. I learned about the significants of the Heiaus and what they were used for. Now i know that Hawaii needs to reduce a lot of our daily intakes because we are useing more of our resources then we can provide. We need to help take care of our land if we want to keep living on it. I Liked learning more about the Hawaiian culture and helping improve it. i hope i can help more and more for these next years because i really liked being included in it.
